• Toyota names hydrogen fuel cell car - Telegraph
  Toyota has revealed that it’s first mass-produced hydrogen fuel cell car, which goes on sale in the UK next year, will be called the Mirai. The word means ‘future’ in Japanese, and was chosen because Toyota believes that’s exactly what the Mirai represents. Toyota CEO Akio Toyoda said: “Today, we are at a turning point in automotive history. A turning point where a four-door sedan can travel 300 miles on a single tank of hydrogen, can be refuelled in under five minutes and emit only water vapour.” Toyota also claimed that the hydrogen that the Mirai will run on can be made from virtually anything, “even garbage”, and that its fuel cell creates enough electricity to power a house for about a week. I wonder if it takes a flux capacitor?
• Sweden Considers Special Labels for Sexist Video Games | TIME
  A government-funded innovation agency in Sweden is considering creating special labels for video games based on whether or not the games’ portrayals of women are sexist. Inspired by the Bechdel Test, Vinnova is paying the Swedish video-game trade organization Dataspelsbranchen approximately $36,672 to study the industry’s female characters. “I do not know of any other project in the world asking this question, and of course, we want Sweden to be a beacon in this area,” said project manager Anton Albiin, who notes that it has not been determined whether all Swedish games would be graded on their treatment of women or whether only games with positive portrayals would receive special labels.
• Snapchat to Let You Send Money to Friends, Thanks to Square | Re/code
  Snapchat unveiled Snapcash on Monday, a new payments feature that allows users to send and receive money from friends through the app’s private messaging service. The new tool is powered by payments company Square, which operates its own similar service called Square Cash that allows people to send and receive money through its Cash app or email. With Snapcash, users simply type out the dollar amount they’d like to send as part of any private message — for example, “here’s $5 for lunch.” As Snapchat’s partner, Square will be responsible for storing all user bank and debit card information, Spiegel says, meaning none of the personal financial information from Snapchat users will reside on Snapchat servers. When a user signs up for Snapcash, they’ll be creating a Square Cash account at the same time and agreeing to Square’s terms of service, according to Square spokesperson. This can lead to nothing good.

  Apple was told to pay a Texas company $23.6 million after a jury found its iPhone and other devices used pager technology from the 1990s without permission. Six patents owned by Mobile Telecommunications Technologies LLC are valid and infringed, a federal jury in Marshall, Texas, said late yesterday. MTel claimed Apple’s Airport Wi-Fi products and iPhone, iPad and iPod Touch devices with messaging used the technology.
• OS X Yosemite update fails to solve Mac Wi-Fi mess | Computerworld
  Apple yesterday released the first update to OS X Yosemite that included fixes for unspecified Wi-Fi problems and improved reliability for connecting to Microsoft Exchange corporate email servers. But Mac owners who had said that Yosemite crippled their Wi-Fi connections reported that the update did not solve their problems. Mac users kicked off several still-growing support forum threads on connectivity issues within hours of Yosemite's release. As of Monday, the largest thread contained nearly 1,100 messages and had been viewed more than 208,000 times. That thread and others on Apple's support site have swollen with claims by users that their Wi-Fi connections have not worked reliably since they upgraded to Yosemite. Some said that they have not been able to connect at all, while others asserted that Wi-Fi would suddenly go dark, often within moments of establishing a connection. Early indications from the most active support discussion thread was that the 10.10.1 update did nothing to help. Others said that although their Macs now kept a Wi-Fi connection, speeds were significantly slower than they should have been. It just works!
• Uber Executive Suggests Digging Up Dirt On Journalists
  A senior executive at Uber suggested that the company should consider hiring a team of opposition researchers to dig up dirt on its critics in the media — and specifically to spread details of the personal life of a female journalist who has criticized the company. The executive, Emil Michael, made the comments in a conversation he later said he believed was off the record. In a statement through Uber Monday evening, he said he regretted them and that they didn’t reflect his or the company’s views. Michael, who has been at Uber for more than a year as its senior vice president of business, floated the idea at a dinner Friday at Manhattan’s Waverly Inn attended by an influential New York crowd including actor Ed Norton and publisher Arianna Huffington. Over dinner, he outlined the notion of spending “a million dollars” to hire four top opposition researchers and four journalists. That team could, he said, help Uber fight back against the press — they’d look into “your personal lives, your families,” and give the media a taste of its own medicine. Michael specifically focused on PandoDaily's Sarah Lacy, who has been a vocal critic of Uber — most recently for its partnership with a French escort agency.

  Some very bad news for drone pilots this morning: An appeals board has ruled that the FAA has wide latitude to make all drone flights illegal in the United States. The decision, by the National Transportation Safety Board, determined that the FAA's existing "aircraft" regulations can apply to model aircraft, drones, and remote controlled aircraft, which is perhaps the most restrictive possible outcome for drone pilots in a legal saga that has dragged on for more than a year. The decision is close to what the FAA originally pushed for, which is so broad that perhaps frisbees and baseballs could be considered "aircraft."
• Nokia's first device after Microsoft is an iPad mini clone that runs Android | The Verge
  Nokia is back in the devices business just under seven months after selling its devices and services unit to Microsoft for $7.2 billion. Nokia is unveiling its N1 Android tablet today, days after revealing its plans to license its brand name. Nokia’s N1 has the same 7.9-inch screen size and even the same 2048 x 1536 resolution. Nokia has even opted for a single piece of anodized aluminum design. The resemblances don’t stop there, though. Nokia’s N1 is almost identical to the rear of the iPad mini thanks to careful placement of the camera, buttons, and headphone jack. Even the bottom of the device has the same speaker grills and what looks like a Lightning port, but is actually one of the first implementations of the reversible Type-C USB connector. The only things missing here to complete the iPad mini look are a home button, chamfered edges, and an Apple logo. There’s even "Natural Aluminum" and "Lava Grey" color schemes, and a cover that looks suspiciously similar to Apple’s Smart Case. Other specifications include a 2.4GHz quad-core Intel Atom Z3580 processor, 2GB of RAM, and 32GB of storage. Nokia’s N1 also has an 8-megapixel camera at the rear, and a 5-megapixel version at the front. That actually sounds better than the current iPad mini.
